Je t’aime, moi non plus

Je t’aime, moi non plus

So 2 days ago I went to waterloo to paint this tottaly innocent painting of 2 furry animals in baseball caps…

I hadn’t seen my friend Pad for a long time and he said he was painting at the legal Graffiti wall so I thought I’d take the day to go paint alongside him. He always likes to paint pieces with a meaning and twisting words or do play on words rather. So I thought i’d do something similar. I had this picture I took in a Zoo a while back with Ashley, and that it would do. I took some pictures of a fellow artist from Romania wearing a baseball cap so I could get the angles right and I was painting a circle at the back when this lady said in French in the croud behind meĀ  said to her friend “C’est une noisette?” Suggesting that I was about to paint a hazelnut, to which I thought (and said to her) great idea! I’m not sure what those furry things are anyway and if they eat nuts but I thought it was fitting, though it looks more like a chestnut.

I normally don’t paint political things and I didn’t want to express my opinion whether I was pro or against Brexit (I am neither) but I just wanted to hint at the situation that “they” just keep talking about. “Je t’aime, moi non plus” is a famous song by the late French singer Serge Gainsbourg and his British wife Jane Birkin that I thought was also fitting, and it means I love you, me neither.
